Why it’s worth it to invest in a quality logo even if you’re a small business owner

A few days ago a customer called me and asked if we could create a logo for him.
He thought he might be able to scribble an improvised logo on Microsoft Word and save a few bucks, but I advised against it. The reason is simple - in the digital world there is nothing worse than presenting a business in a hasty and sloppy way. If you don’t have the minimal resources to create a logo (and thankfully nowadays there’s no need to spend thousands of dollars on a logo), you might as well not have a logo at all.
In theory, not all businesses need a logo, but apparently many businesses insist on getting one anyway.
How many logos of small companies do you remember? And what about big companies?
We all remember the logos of Coca-Cola, AIRBNB, Facebook and more.
How many of us remember the logo of our dentist or veterinarian?
A logo is meant to create an impression, but unless you’re a big brand people are unlikely to remember your logo, so why spend the money?

Here's the main reason why you should still get a logo, even if you’re a small business:
1. A logo suggests seriousness. A business without a logo might be suspected as only recently established, perhaps by some inexperienced individual.
2. A logo provides a graphic expression of a business. If the logo "speaks" to the customer, he/she might be persuaded to use the product or service.
3. And most importantly - a logo is part of the design language of a business's digital presence. Such presence is important if the business has a website (and every businesses needs one nowadays).
The good news is there’s no need to pay designers thousands of dollars for a professional logo these days. There are plenty of good designers and platforms, some of which may offer services for as little as a few dollars.
When it comes to corporate branding, the sums required for investment usually begin at several thousand dollars, if not tens of thousands of dollars.
In the case of small businesses, the financial investment is critical. In our next article, we’ll review the platforms and the main options for selecting a logo designer.
Good luck
